In a quiet rural shelter in North Carolina, a remarkable story unfolds. Tuna, an eight-year-old dog, arrived at Carolina Animal Rescue and Adoption (CARA) in April 2024, bearing the visible scars of past abuse. Her worn teeth and signs of motherhood indicated a life filled with hardship and neglect, yet her journey was just beginning.
A Frightened Spirit
Upon her arrival, Tuna was utterly terrified, spending her days staring blankly at a cinderblock wall. Her fear manifested in aggression, as she lunged at anyone who approached, leaving the staff wondering if her spirit could ever be repaired. Estela Ruiz, the shelter manager, noted the profound impact of her trauma, observing how Tuna hid from human eyes.

Building Trust
To help Tuna, the dedicated staff initiated a slow process to earn her trust. Employee Sonja Lowry spent hours tossing treats across the floor, hoping to connect with the frightened dog. Even attempts to comfort her with a synthetic human hand were met with violent rejection. The staff faced a challenging path ahead, as Tuna was the most shut-down animal Lowry had ever encountered.
A Turning Point
However, a sudden medical complication marked a pivotal moment in Tuna’s life. She developed severe intestinal issues that required urgent veterinary attention. During this time, Tuna had to be carefully fitted with a muzzle for safety. While waiting in the clinic, Ruiz offered Tuna a gentle belly rub, an action that changed everything. For the first time, Tuna accepted human touch, allowing her to experience warmth and affection.
Uncovering Her True Self
This moment of vulnerability began to shift Tuna’s perception of humans. With time, her defensive walls started to crumble. Tuna began to display her true personality, proudly carrying stuffed toys and enjoying playful rolls in the grass during her walks. Lowry and Tuna spent countless hours together, transitioning from cautious interactions to joyful belly rubs.
A New Beginning
The arrival of an adoption application from Morgan Katz marked another significant chapter in Tuna’s life. Katz consistently drove over an hour for visits, patiently earning Tuna’s trust. After a successful foster trial, Tuna officially left the shelter two years after her initial rescue. Today, she enjoys a peaceful home with a fenced yard, resting comfortably in a plush bed.
Reflecting on Tuna’s journey, Lowry acknowledges the profound transformation of her once-terrified companion. Tuna’s story serves as a testament to the resilience of animals and the power of patience and unconditional love.
