While hiking near Iztaccíhuatl mountain, Fabiola Franyutti stumbled upon a frail little dog alone in the wilderness. The emaciated pup, appearing weak and out of place, approached Fabiola and her group, accepting their hiking snacks and curling up at their feet.
Moved by the dog’s condition, Fabiola promised to give her a home if she followed them back to the parking lot. Remarkably, the determined dog, later named Shanti, stayed by Fabiola’s side during the descent.

A Heartbreaking Diagnosis
Once in Fabiola’s care, Shanti was taken to a veterinary clinic for evaluation. The diagnosis revealed that she was suffering from a rare, transmissible cancer known as TVT, which explained her abandonment in the forest. Fabiola realized that her previous owners likely left her behind when they discovered her illness.
A Journey to Recovery
Despite the grim diagnosis, Fabiola was resolute in her commitment to Shanti. The veterinarian assured her that TVT was treatable with a comprehensive care plan. Shanti began a rigorous treatment program that involved chemotherapy, a high-calorie diet, and continuous medical monitoring.
Triumph and Transformation
Within three months, Shanti defied the odds and was declared cancer-free. Fabiola expressed her overwhelming joy upon receiving the news from the vet. With the burden of illness lifted, Shanti began to regain her strength and weight.
As she recovered, Shanti’s true personality emerged, showcasing her affectionate and gentle nature. Fabiola describes her as the kindest dog she has ever known, grateful for the bond they share.
Shanti, the once-abandoned mountain dog, found a loving forever home, proving that even in the darkest circumstances, resilience and kindness can lead to a brighter future.
