As they navigated the perilous streets, the activists were shocked by the cruelty that had left Chiquita in such a vulnerable state. Miraculously, despite her injuries and the dangers of traffic, she had survived. When they finally reached her, the terrified dog melted into their arms, seeking safety and comfort.

Chiquita was then taken to the Charterhouse Vet Clinic, where a thorough examination revealed severe health issues stemming from her life on the streets. She was diagnosed with canine typhus, a painful skin condition, extreme anemia, and an ear infection. Additionally, tests were conducted to investigate a concerning mass related to her paralysis.

Despite her suffering, Chiquita displayed a remarkably gentle spirit. She offered soft kisses and craved affection from the clinic staff, showcasing a resilience that stood in stark contrast to her harsh experiences. As the days passed, her caregivers worked tirelessly to provide the medical care she desperately needed.

The local activists faced significant challenges, including mounting medical bills and limited resources. They were determined to find a safe and loving permanent home for Chiquita, hoping that specialized rescue organizations or compassionate families in North America or Europe would step forward to help.

Chiquita’s journey towards recovery is ongoing, requiring a nurturing environment that will allow her to heal physically and emotionally. She has already shown immense courage, looking up at her rescuers with love despite her traumatic past. As Jose Alberto poignantly stated, “She needs time to get better, to find her forever home, somewhere where she will be safe, looked after and given all the love she needs.”
