On a quiet road just outside Beirut, a tiny, two-month-old stray puppy caught the attention of passing volunteers. As they stopped to offer water, they discovered that this innocent creature was hiding a harrowing secret beneath her frail fur.
The puppy, later named Bondok, approached cautiously, but Amal Andari, a dedicated volunteer for Animals Lebanon, quickly noticed a severe puncture wound on her head. Despite her fear and pain, Bondok wagged her tail, seeking kindness from the strangers.

Amal questioned a nearby bystander about the puppy’s injuries, and although he dismissed them as the result of a larger animal’s attack, Amal knew better. She immediately took Bondok to a veterinary clinic in Beirut, where X-rays revealed a shocking reality: the puppy had been intentionally targeted with dozens of small metal projectiles.
This brutal act of cruelty left the rescue team in disbelief. One projectile had tragically taken away her sight in the left eye. Further complicating her situation, Bondok was also diagnosed with parvovirus, a dangerous and often fatal illness.
Fighting for Survival
Bondok faced a grueling four-day battle for her life, with a mere twenty-five percent chance of survival against the viral infection. During this time, Amal remained by her side, providing constant support as the veterinary team administered intensive care, including antibiotics and fluid therapy.
As the hours passed, Bondok’s determination became evident. Despite the overwhelming odds, her spirit shone through. After four exhausting days, the puppy began to show signs of recovery and ultimately triumphed over the parvovirus.
A New Beginning
Bondok was discharged from the clinic and placed in a specialized foster home. The quiet, frightened puppy transformed into a vibrant, energetic dog, joyfully playing with her new foster siblings. Her playful spirit left them happily exhausted, showing that her traumatic past had not defined her future.
Animals Lebanon is now on the lookout for a permanent, loving home for Bondok, with hopes of finding her a safe haven beyond Lebanon’s borders. Amal reflects on the resilience of animals like Bondok, stating, “They can break her body with their cruelty, but they could never extinguish the beautiful, trusting light she was meant to bring into this world.”
