On a frigid day, as I walked home with my son, a shocking sight caught my eye—crimson tracks in the snow leading to a frail, trembling dog beneath a parked car. The greyhound’s condition was dire, her slender body frozen and almost lifeless.
As I reached out to touch her icy fur, I feared for her survival. The parking lot concealed a story of severe trauma, and pulling her from the cold revealed deep tissue damage on her legs that had been neglected for weeks. I couldn’t fathom how anyone could abandon her in such a cruel situation.
We quickly found a handcart and gently lifted her fragile frame onto it to keep her off the freezing ground. Pushing the cart through the deep snow was exhausting, but time was of the essence for her fading heartbeat.

At the emergency clinic, the veterinary team moved swiftly, cleaning and disinfecting her severe injuries. Despite the pain, she remained calm, never snapping or pulling away. Medical examinations uncovered a deeply torn tendon, ruptured veins, and a fractured tail, all pointing to a history of intentional cruelty.
After stabilizing her and bandaging her wounds, we made sure she was comfortable as we brought her back home. The first morning in our care, she was weak and uninterested in kibble. I prepared a warm bowl of specialized milk powder and beef snacks, and seeing her eat with such desperation was heart-wrenching.
We named her Xue’er, a tribute to the snowstorm she had survived. Shortly after, she underwent complex surgery to repair her tendons and veins. Despite the severity of the operation, Xue’er’s resilience shone through as she began her recovery.
However, her past of starvation led her to guard her food vigorously, even from our Corgi. To ensure she was getting enough nutrition, I separated them during mealtimes and made sure she received extra chicken legs to help rebuild her strength.
Over the next few weeks, Xue’er made remarkable progress. Follow-up X-rays showed her surgical sites healing well, and her shivering form was gradually replaced by a healthier, more vibrant dog. I added rich egg yolks to her meals, which became a source of jealousy for our other dog.
As time passed, the anxiety that once surrounded her faded, and both dogs learned to coexist peacefully. Now, they walk together by my side, two loyal companions who have overcome so much. Xue’er, once left to die in a freezing parking lot, now has a bright future ahead of her.
Watching her sleep peacefully by the fire, I realized that rescue is not just about treating wounds; it’s about restoring faith in humanity for those who have faced darkness.
