In February 2007, animal advocate Theresa Strader received an urgent call that would change the lives of countless dogs. Fifty Italian Greyhounds were being auctioned at a commercial breeding facility, a place where the air was thick with the stench of ammonia, and hundreds of dogs were crammed into metal cages, deprived of sunlight and care.
Among them was a small dog marked only by the number “251.” This fragile creature, later named Lily, was huddled in the corner of her cage, her physical condition a stark representation of the neglect she endured. Theresa could see the gentle spirit within her, yearning for compassion despite her heartbreaking circumstances.

The Rescue
Without hesitation, Theresa decided to rescue Lily. She removed this broken soul from her cage, replacing her cold inventory number with a name deserving of dignity. The journey to recovery for Lily began as she entered a warm home, where love and care awaited her.
A New Beginning
After spending 2,555 days on wire flooring, Lily faced the daunting task of adjusting to her new life. The sensation of soft grass beneath her paws was unfamiliar and frightening. Every human movement made her flinch, reflecting her past experiences of harsh treatment. Yet, Theresa’s unwavering patience and love reassured Lily that she was safe.
As the days turned into weeks and months, Lily’s terror slowly transformed into curiosity. She learned to embrace the warmth of blankets and the joy of gentle treats. Over fifteen months, Lily experienced the love and comfort of being a cherished family member, a stark contrast to her previous life as a breeding machine.
A Bittersweet Farewell
Sadly, despite the healing power of love, Lily’s body bore the scars of her past. On May 13, 2008, surrounded by her loving family, she took her final breath. Her time was painfully short compared to her years of suffering, but her legacy was just beginning.
Creating Change
Lily’s impact did not end with her passing. Her story inspired Theresa to found National Mill Dog Rescue, a movement dedicated to saving dogs from similar fates. To date, the organization has rescued over 12,516 dogs, ensuring they receive loving names and proper care instead of being treated as mere inventory.
Lily’s legacy is a testament to the change that can come from one small soul. Her life, although filled with pain, sparked a revolution in the fight for the freedom of thousands of dogs still trapped in darkness.
