Sometimes, the most profound healing comes from the companionship of a kindred spirit who has endured similar pain. Within the stark confines of the Cherokee County Animal Shelter, the sound of kennel doors clanging punctuated the heavy silence hanging over the many forgotten animals inside.

In one shadowed enclosure, a fragile Shih-Tzu puppy named Ruggles shrank away, trembling from the lasting trauma inflicted by a harsh breeding facility.
