Ignored by rushing commuters, she clung to the spot where her owner had left her, embodying the heartbreak of abandonment. The heavy rain mirrored the grief of a dog left behind, highlighting the indifference of those around her.
Finding Maru
While grappling with the loss of my own dog, Jojo, I was drawn to a photograph of Maru, sitting helplessly at the bus stop. I rushed through the rain, navigating the busy streets to reach her. There she was, drenched and waiting in the exact spot where her world had fallen apart. Bystanders casually mentioned that her owner had simply left her behind, boarding a bus without a backward glance. No one had intervened to help.

The Healing Begins
Upon bringing Maru home, I quickly discovered the extent of her trauma. Infested with ticks and malnourished, she weighed only nine kilograms at just four or five months old. I spent hours carefully removing the parasites while she lay still, surrendering to gentleness she had never known. She experienced anxiety that night, pacing and unable to find peace as she dealt with the memories of abandonment.
A New Chapter
The next morning, Maru approached me, her tail wagging tentatively, as if to ask if she was finally safe. A trip to the veterinary clinic confirmed her fragile state but revealed her indomitable spirit. After a four-day stay for monitoring, she was cleared to come home, and I named her Maru, a word meaning “perfection.” This marked the beginning of her new life.
Transformation Over Time
In the weeks that followed, Maru transformed from a broken puppy into a joyful companion. Her fears were replaced by a vibrant energy, and she discovered the simple pleasures of life, like playing with colorful toys and interacting with other dogs. The stark contrast between her past and present became evident, as she now thrived in a warm, loving environment.
