This stranger immediately contacted Theresa Sumpter, the founder of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue. With urgency, they transported Koa to APAWS Veterinary Hospital. The veterinary team quickly realized that Koa’s situation was dire; his temperature was so low it didn’t register on the thermometer. They placed him in a warming unit and began administering IV fluids. Tests revealed that Koa was not suffering from an illness but from prolonged starvation, weighing only 33 pounds at just 1.5 years old.

The first 24 hours after his rescue were filled with uncertainty. However, Koa demonstrated remarkable resilience. As he regained warmth and strength, he began to lift his head, showing signs of life. By the 48-hour mark, the staff felt a wave of relief, realizing Koa was on the path to recovery.
