The alarm, triggered by a construction crew working nearby, cut through the silence of the neighborhood, prompting the workers to investigate the source of the noise.

As they searched, they found Frances tethered to a porch, exposed to the harsh Florida sun and deprived of proper care after her owner had died weeks prior. The sight of her frail body and the heavy metal chain binding her to a tragic past sparked a frantic rescue mission.

Claire Morera, one of the workers, immediately documented the scene and contacted the 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida rescue group. Jan Stenger and her team, who were nearby on another mission, redirected to assist Frances. Stenger, known for her resilience in animal rescues, found this situation particularly heart-wrenching. “We don’t break easily, but we were both a mess on that rescue,” she later reflected.

Upon arrival, the rescue team learned about Frances’ dire situation—she had been left in the elements without food and water, her heavy chain rusted and seized. With specialized bolt cutters, the team was able to remove the chain only after reaching the animal hospital, where Frances offered her first wag of the tail, a sign of her relief.

Medical Treatment and Recovery

Frances faced significant medical challenges, suffering from a severe parasite infestation that required extensive bathing and care. Her untreated eyes also posed a serious issue, leading veterinarians to surgically remove them to relieve her pain. Despite the trauma, she was free of heartworm, and a nutritious diet began to restore her health.

A New Home and Unexpected Bonding

After her recovery, Jan Stenger offered Frances a temporary foster home, initially planning to find her a permanent family. However, Frances’ gentle nature and remarkable resilience quickly endeared her to Stenger, who found herself unwilling to let go. “Never in a million years did I think we would keep her,” Stenger admitted, but Frances’ affectionate personality shone through, proving her ability to trust despite her past.
