Some stories in life begin with hope, while others start from a place of heartbreak so profound that survival itself becomes a remarkable triumph. For Lunita, her story began on a quiet street in Salta, Argentina, abandoned and vulnerable. Tied to a metal railing outside a grooming shop, she was left paralyzed and alone with a broken wheelchair and a note from the family that had cared for her for years, explaining they could no longer provide the care she needed. With no food or water and unable to move or understand her situation, Lunita’s survival depended on the hope that someone would find her.
The Harsh Road to Recovery
Lunita’s rescue came just in time when local animal rescuers from LUBA Salta discovered her. They untied her, carefully lifted her, and promised she would never be ignored again. However, her journey toward healing was far from straightforward. She was given a replacement wheelchair and eventually caught the interest of a family in the United States who wanted to adopt her. Unfortunately, this first placement proved challenging because the family underestimated the demanding and specialized care a paralyzed dog needs.
By the time Lunita was removed from that home, her condition had deteriorated significantly. She weighed barely sixteen kilograms and endured complications from staph infections and mange. Severe urine scalding had damaged her skin, causing fur loss on her lower body, and even gentle touch brought her pain. Despite all this, Lunita’s spirit remained unbroken.
Her next foster caregiver took over with renewed dedication—treating her wounds with medicated baths and providing a carefully balanced diet of fresh chicken and turkey. Slowly, Lunita began to heal both physically and emotionally. She started forming trusting bonds and responding more gently to those around her.

A Vibrant Personality Emerges
As Lunita’s skin healed and her fur returned, her true personality shined through. She was anything but fragile in spirit. Instead, she revealed a joyful, stubborn nature common to strong-willed dogs. Playful and brimming with life, Lunita became a beloved local figure, easily recognized by the small purple tutu she wore.
Her mobility improved significantly when she received a custom wheelchair from Eddie’s Wheels, tailored to fit her unique body and needs. With this newfound freedom, Lunita moved swiftly along sidewalks, explored neighborhood bridges, and even rolled gleefully through snow—her eyes wide with delight. She practiced howling alongside her canine companions, no longer simply surviving but truly living every day.
A Full Life in a Brief Time
In June 2018, Lunita celebrated her eleventh birthday. This milestone was a victory not just for her, but symbolized hope for every animal abandoned and overlooked like she had been. Surrounded by loved ones and special treats made just for her, Lunita finally had a family who understood and cherished her for who she was and what she needed. She was truly home.
Tragically, only a month later, Lunita fell ill and passed away peacefully with her caregivers by her side. Though her time with her permanent family was short, it was filled with more love and fulfillment than many animals experience in much longer lives. Her caregiver expressed that Lunita profoundly changed her life and was deeply loved. The news of Lunita’s passing touched the many who had followed her journey, mingling grief and gratitude inseparably.
Lessons from Lunita’s Life
Lunita’s story leaves behind powerful truths. A disability does not diminish the worth of a life; navigating challenges often uncovers extraordinary courage and resilience. Genuine care involves unwavering presence, even when the effort is demanding. Every joyful moment—a tutu, a custom wheelchair, play in the snow, a cherished birthday—stands as a small victory over the pain of her past.
No longer tied to a railing or waiting for rescue, Lunita’s final months were lived on her own terms—free and vibrant. Her journey proves that even the most painful beginnings can lead to a life worth living, no matter how briefly that chapter lasts.
