On August 4, a man abandoned a dog along Dowdy Ferry Road in Texas, a location known for animal dumping. This callous act was caught on newly installed surveillance cameras, leading to a swift investigation.
The footage revealed Gorge Spears pulling over, removing the black-and-white dog from his vehicle by her leash, and leaving her on the roadside before driving away. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, aided by the SPCA of Texas, was able to issue an arrest warrant based on this evidence.

After realizing he was recorded, Spears turned himself in on September 11, defending his actions by claiming he was helping a family member. However, the dog, named Claira-Belle by her rescuers, turned out to be gentle and timid—far from the uncontrollable creature he described.
Claira-Belle was found unharmed just a day after her abandonment and was taken to the SPCA of Texas, where she received care and love. The staff quickly recognized her sweet nature, contrary to the claims made by Spears.
Shortly after her rescue, Claira-Belle caught the attention of a caring family. They adopted her, renaming her KD. This new family was delighted to discover her calm demeanor and affectionate personality as she settled into her new home.
Now, KD enjoys cuddles on the couch, walks in the neighborhood, and being loved by her new family. Her transition from a discarded pet to a cherished companion illustrates the impact of swift rescue efforts and community support.
This case not only resulted in a successful adoption but also marked a significant milestone as the first animal cruelty arrest stemming from the Dowdy Ferry surveillance initiative. The partnership between the SPCA of Texas and local law enforcement sends a powerful message against animal cruelty.
